Why This Formula Is Historical, Not Clinical

William Stern turned it into a ratio in 1912, and Lewis Terman refined it into the IQ formula in 1916. The formula works reasonably well for children, where mental age climbs steadily with chronological age. It breaks down for adults, since mental age plateaus in the late teens while chronological age keeps climbing, which would make everyone’s IQ appear to drop with age under this formula. That’s exactly why David Wechsler replaced it with deviation IQ in 1939, and no clinical psychologist uses the ratio formula to score a real test today.
