Chronological Age Calculator UK
Chronological age is calculated identically everywhere, but this calculator adds one thing the others don’t: it works out a child’s England/Wales school year group directly from their date of birth, using the standard 1 September intake rule.
UK-Specific Context

- Date fields are unambiguous regardless of whether you normally read dates as DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY.
New Zealand and Australian Use
The Y;M;D calculation works for CELF-5 Australian and New Zealand standardisation and NDIS early intervention documentation. School cut-off dates vary by state or region, so use our main calculator with the relevant local cut-off as the reference date.
Is the age calculation different for UK assessments?
No. Chronological age is the elapsed time between two dates everywhere. Only the assessment context and school cut-off dates differ by country.
How is the school year group worked out?
By the child’s age on 31 August of the relevant school year, the standard England and Wales intake rule. Scotland and some local authorities differ slightly.
Is this a different calculator from your other tools?
Yes. This is the only one that converts a date of birth directly into a UK school year group, not just an age.
